A few years ago, friends of ours, Kay and Mo, found themselves in a particularly challenging season. Under the heavy, compounding demands of work, raising children, and managing daily responsibilities, the teamwork in their marriage began to weaken.
“Communication between us had become strained,” they recall. “Small misunderstandings often turned into unnecessary disagreements, and we found ourselves becoming more focused on our individual frustrations than on working together as a team.”
This is the critical moment where a family’s trajectory can shift—and for Kay and Mo, it shifted with a mentoring relationship. They graciously shared their story about the impact of marriage mentoring with us and want to share it with you today.
Through the FamilyLife Canada Marriage Mentoring Initiative, we had the privilege of walking alongside them. Our ministry approach doesn’t use flashy events or complicated curriculums; just small, intentional conversations built on genuine compassion and a sincere desire to see couples succeed. For many months, we offered a “steady source of wisdom, encouragement, and practical direction.”
Through listening and carefully planned questions Kay and Mo now had the space to identify the root causes of their friction. In that safe space to process, simple and actionable steps to rebuild trust began to take root. The shift in their marriage was profound when they applied a key piece of advice:
“We learned to intentionally create time for meaningful conversations and to approach disagreements with the goal of understanding rather than winning…Our communication is healthier, and our appreciation for one another has grown immensely.”
But the true power of mentor-mentee relationships lies in their ripple effect. The mentorship didn’t just save a marriage from unnecessary frustration; it reshaped family relationships.
As Kay and Mo’s communication healed, the wisdom they gleaned naturally bled into their living room and their children’s bedrooms. The mentorship completely transformed their approach to raising the next generation.
“We learned that parenting is not just about correcting behaviour but about shaping character, building trust, and creating an environment where children can thrive emotionally, spiritually, and socially.”
When churches invest in training couples to mentor others, they aren’t just creating a temporary support system or an inspiring moment—they are reshaping the discipleship culture of their church and community. Through simple listening, guiding, and sharing of lives, Kay and Mo are now a “better couple, more intentional parents, and a stronger family.”
The investment made in one living room today will echo for decades. As Kay and Mo put it perfectly:
“The lessons they have imparted continue to shape the decisions we make and the values we seek to pass on to our children.”
🤝 Together, we are reshaping the discipleship culture in churches across our nation.
