So Your Daughter Wants to Date ðŸ™€

Does the image of sweaty palms or a little burst of outright panic come to mind when, as a dad, your daughter wants to date or perhaps is dabbling in dating another guy? What do you do, how do you respond, what’s your role? Do you even know where to turn for guidance? Do you just want to kill the guy without even knowing him? Wow. That just went over the top!

Let’s see if we can collect our heads for a moment.

Hmm. Do you instantly flip to the wonderful world of a million voices, also known as Google?

For me, as a former pastor of children and families, I was always looking for new resources to equip and encourage parents on a wide range of topics. Now as a representative/family coach with FamilyLife Canada, I’m still always on the lookout for great resources. Also, as a dad (just maybe I’m writing this out of necessity!) I want to know where to turn for great resources to guide my family well.

I could go to random Google. Or, as my daughter said, “That was fast,” as I went to a trusted source in seconds without the wondering or the panic. I quickly sent her a resource that took me only a few moments to find, but I knew where to turn.

My mission is to equip families with great tools, experiences and relationships that offer help and hope for all kinds of situations. I know I’m biased, but where else would I look, but to FamilyLife ministries? I first searched the FamilyLife Canada website, but ended up turning to the US site with the search term ‘dating.’

I got this great podcast episode and listened as soon as I could.

The point is, I knew where to turn. I knew the community to trust. I knew where to get the tool I needed in the moment I needed it. Am I also surrounded with the people that share my values? This is an important question to answer too. Church is a fantastic place (when it’s healthy, not perfect) to rub shoulders with others on a similar journey. Hopefully this church is also equipped with a strong marriage and family ministry strategy that empowers families with these kinds of resources, tools, relationships and trained leaders.

Let’s reduce the sweaty palms imagery with a strong and confident dad pose!
